Nosebleed Precautions

Although your nosebleed has stopped, healing will not be completed for 72 hours or longer.

Here are some important instructions:

  1. Do not blow your nose for 72 hours - and then only very gently.
  2. Try not to sneeze; if absolutely necessary, keep your mouth open so the force of the sneeze can be expelled through your mouth.
  3. Always keep your head up, as when tying shoes.
  4. Sleep with your head elevated on at least two pillows, keeping it above the level of your heart.
  5. Do not bend over, lift heavy objects or strain to have a bowel movement.
  6. If bleeding re-occurs, squeeze both nostrils tightly for five minutes by the clock, with head erect. If bleeding persists, contact your doctor.
  7. If you do not have nasal packing, or as soon as it is removed, begin using two puffs of saline nasal mist in each nostril six or more times daily. Also apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment inside each nostril, gently but thoroughly twice daily. Do this for ten (10) days. Both of the above-mentioned items should be available over-the-counter in any drugstore.
